Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Gertrude Elizabeth (Dundas) Schneski, 93, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation in Bennington, where she had lived for the last nine years. She was the wife of the late Louis J. Schneski, who died in 1972.

She was born on June 30, 1911 in Ottawa, Canada, daughter of William and Mary (Gaefka) Dundas. Gertrude moved to North Hoosick, N.Y. with her parents at the age of 4, where she became a U.S. citizen. She went through the public school system in the Hoosick Falls, N.Y. area. She received a degree in 1931 from the Olivia Sage School of Practical Nursing of the New York Infirmary for Women and Children in New York City. She then worked at the original Health Center on Hall Street in Hoosick Falls.

Gertrude married her husband, Louis, in 1933 and they raised their family on Mechanic Street in Hoosick Falls. She later worked at the Albany Felt Company and Lurie’s Department Store, both in Hoosick Falls. In 1987, she was one of the first residents of the Danforth Adult Home, housed in the Albany Felt building where she once worked. When health concerns caused her to move to Bennington Health and Rehabilitation in 1995, that building was next door to the homes of her nieces Mary King and Patricia Babcock and her nephew Andrew John Schneski.

A love for music began by singing with her two sisters as a youth and followed to her longtime faithful membership in the choir of the First United Church, Presbyterian in Hoosick Falls. She also enjoyed working at the voting poll in the first ward during elections and being a member of the Home Demonstration Club of Hoosick Falls for several years.

Survivors include her son, L. William Schneski of Williamstown, Mass.; her sister, Violet Baker of West Hoosick, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Heidi Schneski of Lee, Mass., Samuel Schneski of Conway, Mass., Denise Manning of Hoosick Falls and Duane Moll of Bennington; and her great-grandchildren, Nathan and John Moll, Patrick and Erik Manning, Robert Jr. and Heather Shaw. She is predeceased by her daughter Nancy Moll, who died in 1987, and her sister Eleanor Dundas, who died in 1972.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. from the First United Church, Presbyterian on Main Street in Hoosick Falls, with the Rev. David McMillan officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the fellowship hall of the church on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the start of the service.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main St., Hoosick Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Church, Presbyterian or the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad, through the funeral home.
