Mrs. Gertrude H. Nowak Chapman, who had achieved nearly 104 years of age, died Saturday, June 25th at her home. She was born in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Sept. 13, 1912, the daughter of the late Stanley and Frances Koch Nowak. A graduate of St. Mary's Academy, she was employed at the former Albany Felt Co., the business expanded and became known then as the Albany International Co.. Mrs. Chapman retired from there in 1977 and moved to Pittsfield to make her home in 1982. A communicant of St. Joseph's Church, she had always enjoyed playing cards with her sisters, her daughter and son and their families. During the suspense of these card games, she would often challenge other by saying ' God hates a coward '. Mrs. Chapman had always aspired to become a nurse, yet due to the untimely death of her father, she was required to go to work at a very early age. Yet, that did not prevent her from exercising her great skills for caring, listening and problem solving for her family and friends. " World Famous" for her potato salad, vegetable soup and meatballs and sauce, she enjoyed cooking for her family, and sharing with friends and neighbors. Her husband, John S. Chapman, whom she married Sept. 23, 1934, died in 1972. She is survived by her daughter, Gail F. Whitehouse, with whom she lived and her son, John M. Chapman ( Mary ) of Howland, Ohio. She was the very "Proud Gram" of Suzanne and ( Patty ) Mary Beth ( James ) , Michael ( Gina ) , Jennifer and Thomas (Clem) and the " Proud Nana " of her 7 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Alex, Amy, Luke, Dylan and Connor and her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Stephen and Thomas Nowak, and her three sisters, Florence Dorr, Margaret Kempf, and Mary DeLorenzo. Chapman, Gertrude H., age 103, died June 25th . Calling hours at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be WEDNESDAY morning beginning at 9:00 am followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. Msgr. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
