Obituary Condolences

Gilberte R. Manning 1921 - 2009 ARLINGTON, VT Gilberte R. Manning, 87 of Arlington, Vt., died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. Gil was born in Island Pond, Vt., on June 19, 1921, daughter of Leonidas and Ida Marie Crete Lavoie. She was a 1939 graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Island Pond. Gil completed the nurses training program in 1942 at Fannie Allen Hospital in Winooski. She spent six months at the Boston City Hospital as part of her training and delivered the Valedictorian address at the graduation exercises which took place at St. Michaels College in Winooski. She left Vermont shortly thereafter to pursue her career in nursing in New York City where she began work at St. Claire's Hospital where she met her future husband, Robert J. Manning. Fr. Andrews, the chaplain at St. Claire's Hospital, performed the wedding ceremony on Jan. 14, 1945. Gil and Robert moved from New York City to Astoria shortly after their first born child was born. Their next move took them to Hicksville Long Island where their second child was born and they remained for many years. Gil traveled to different hospitals to work as a private duty nurse; she also attended the yearly Nurses Alumnae luncheons which were held in Burlington, Vt. Their last move was to Arlington, Vt., when they took an early retirement. Feeling that she had too much time on her hands, she decided to go back into nursing and worked part time at Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington for several years. She volunteered at the blood bank in the early years and also with the senior meals and looked forward to going to senior meals held once a month at different area restaurants. She enjoyed cross country skiing, knitting and crocheting and accumulated many samplers which she embroidered. She was very involved in making baby quilts for "Babies at Risk." She was awarded several ribbons for quilts which she had entered at the Hildene Quilt Show. She enjoyed going to auctions, tag sales and took much pride in her perennial flower garden. Her greatest joy was getting together for family reunions in the Northeast Kingdom and being with friends and family. She leaves her two daughters and sons-in-law; Judith Ann, and Michael Baran, of Bolivia, N.C. and Geralyn Manning, and Jack Towsley, of Dorset, Vt., a sister; Angela Schlipmann of Florida, three grandsons; Marc and Scott Masone and Peter Baran, a great granddaughter; Olivia Masone, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Robert, two sisters; Armande O'Neill and Gertrude Cilley and five brothers; Herve, Raymond, Hermas, Marcel and Paul Lavoie. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Arlington.
