SHAFTSBURY -- Gladys E. Gates, 101, widow of Bernie D. Gates and a former resident of Buck Hill Road in Shaftsbury, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington.

Mrs. Gates died two days prior to her 102nd birthday.

Born in Bennington on Jan. 14, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Susan (Quackenbush) Martin. She received her education in the Bennington schools.

Mr. and Mrs. Gates were married in Shaftsbury on June 30, 1928. Mr. Gates died Jan. 17, 2000.

In earlier years, Mrs. Gates was employed at the Allen A, EZ Mill, Hoy Manufacturing and Thomson Manufacturing Co., all in Bennington.

Her hobbies and interests included embroidering, reading and cooking. Her home and family were her primary interests.

Survivors include four daughters, Lorraine Hoag of North Bennington and Marilyn LaBrie of Bennington, Sandra Kirkpatrick of Shaftsbury and Nancy Scammell of Port Salerno, Fla.; a son, Daniel B. Gates of Port Salerno, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Gates was predeceased by a son, Bernard Gates; three grandsons; a granddaughter, four brothers and five sisters, George Martin, Arnold Martin, Richard Martin, Edmond Martin, Shirley Martin, Susan Martin, Mildred Watson, Ruth Browe and Nancy Hilliard.

Graveside committal services took place at the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery with the Reverend Deborah Estey, officiating.

At the request of Mrs. Gates, there were no calling hours.

Should friends desire, contributions in memory of Mrs. Gates may be made to either the Activities Fund at Prospect Nursing Home or VNA & Hospice of Southwestern Vermont Health Care through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
