WEST DOVER -- Gordon R. “Randy” Batchelder Sr., 62, a resident of Country Club Road, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 15, 2003 at his home. Born in Wilmington on Oct. 29, 1940, he was the son of the late Gordon Batchelder and Lavenia (Aubertine) Batchelder Mowe who survives.

Mr. Batchelder received his education in Monroe Bridge, Mass. schools and continued his studies at St. Joseph’s High School in North Adams, Mass. In earlier years he had worked at the former Deerfield Glassine in Monroe Bridge, at the James River Paper Corporation in North Adams, had owned and operated Vermont Chairs in Readsboro with his wife Linda from 1984 until 1988, he had also worked with his brother Frank as a private contractor for more than 20 years, more recently he had worked with his son Chris assisting him with his contracting business in Colorado and worked with his son Todd in the Deerfield Valley area with his home maintenance business, he had also worked at Snow Resorts in West Dover.

He was a communicant of Notre Dame Catholic Church in North Adams and had served as an altar boy at St. Joachim’s Church in Readsboro during his youth. Mr. Batchelder enjoyed woodworking, especially craft items and building chairs. He was a New York Yankees fan. He will be remembered as being a wonderful man who was good to everyone. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Linda (Phelps) Batchelder, whom he married June 20, 1981 in Readsboro; two sons, Chris Batchelder of Fairplay, Colo. and Todd Batchelder of Wilmington; two daughters, Tammie Weiss of Ossining, N.Y. and Carla Batchelder or West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother Frank Batchelder and his wife Gayle of Clarksburg, Mass.; a sister, Lorrie Massari and her husband Peter of Brattleboro; a step-son, Peter White, of Downington, Pa.; a step-daughter, Marni Lynch of Belchertown, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Chris Jr., Brandon, Bridgette and Stephen Batchelder, Richard Weiss, Amanda and Todd Batchelder Jr. and Dustin Breeden; two great-grandchildren; two nieces, Amy Smith of North Adams and Kristin Duncan of Phoenix, Ariz.; two step-grandchildren, Matthew (Frank) and Michael Lynch; two nephews, Peter Massari Jr. and Frank Batchelder Jr; seven great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Gordon R. Batchelder Jr., who died in infancy.

The liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 20 at 11 a.m. at St. Joachim’s Church with the Rev. Charles Wallen pastor of Our Lady or Fatima Church in Wilmington officiating. Interment will be private. Friends may call at the Covey & Allen Funeral Home in Wilmington on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. when the family will be present. The vigil service will be held at 3:45.
