Gordon Spencer Sweet Sr.

1930-2013 NORTH BENNINGTON Gordon Spencer Sweet Sr., 82, a lifelong resident of North Bennington, died peacefully Friday, May 17, 2013 at the Vermont Veterans Home surrounded by his family.

Born in North Bennington on July 26, 1930, he was the son of Clover E. Sweet Sr. and Rose (Seaton) Sweet. Gordy received his education in the North Bennington Schools and was a 1950 graduate of North Bennington High School.

A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Gordy served in the U. S. Army with Company I, 172nd Infantry Division.

Gordy married his high school sweetheart, Edith L. Blodgett on June 16, 1951 in North Bennington. Edith died March 25, 1999. Gordy later married Elsine LaCroix on July 5, 2003.

In early years Gordy was employed at the BenMont Paper Company in Bennington and later at Agway Petroleum. In 1974 Gordy and Edith purchased Cross Oil Company which they operated for several years. At the time of his retirement he was employed as a purchasing agent for Bennington College. In addition, Gordy spent many years as the owner of GSS Fire Extinguishers in the area.

Gordy was a member of the North Bennington Fire Department for 53 years during which time he held several posts including serving as department chief for seven years from 1980 thru 1987.

A member of St. Peters Episcopal Church, Gordy was also a member of American Legion Post 13 and a former member of the Bennington Moose Lodge. He enjoyed camping and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gordy loved music and passed this gift down through the generations within his family.

Survivors include his wife, Elsine Sweet of North Bennington; his six children and their spouses, Gordon Spencer Jr. and Lynn Sweet of Bennington, Patti and Billy Kelley of Manchester Center, Perry and Terry Sweet of West Arlington, Leigh and Ellen Sweet of South Burlington, Wendy and Skip Fagerholm of Shaftsbury and Corey Sweet and her fiance Todd Saunders of North Bennington; 15 grandchildren, Kristie Quackenbush, Randall J. Sweet, Casey Arsenault, Kylene, Dustin and Shawna Kelley, Ryan Sweet, Jennifer and Laura Catherine Sweet, Whitney and Gus Fagerholm, Thomas, Michal, Samantha and Elizabeth Hyland; five great-grandchildren, Makenzie and Landen Quackenbush, Hannah, Hunter and Hadleigh Arsenault and Patrick Kelley; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Gordy was predeceased by a grandson, Jeremy Sweet, a daughter-in-law, Randa Sweet, a sister, June Bruneau and a brother, Clover E. Sweet Jr.

The funeral will be held from St. Peters Episcopal Church on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. where the Burial Office with Holy Eucharist will be offered by Rev. Justin Lanier, Rector.

Friends may call at the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Grandview Cemetery.

All members of the North Bennnington Fire Department are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. to pay respects to the family of Past Chief Gordon Sweet.
