MANCHESTER -- Gordon Tennant, 92, a resident of Manchester Center, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, in Bennington at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation.

A former resident of White Plains, N.Y., for 56 years, Gordon was born in Jersey City, N.J., on July 22, 1915, to Amanda Brossard Tennant and Charles Ralph Tennant.

He attended school in White Plains as well as four years at the Hoosac School in Hoosick, N.Y.

He was drafted in Feb. 1942 and served for five years in the Army’s 44th Infantry Division, first being sent to Fort Lewis in the Pacific Northwest, then to Europe, entering France at Cherbourg and continuing on through Germany and Austria.

While stationed at Fort Lewis, Gordon married Helen Belnap of White Plains. Helen passed away on June 22, 1978.

Gordon worked for Westchester Lighting Company, later known as Con Edison. He retired after 30 years in 1978.

On May 12, 1985, Gordon married Edythe Lacy Schneider. In 1990, Gordon and Edythe moved to Manchester Center, where they quickly settled into the community. Gordon enjoyed his church, Zion Episcopal, the Seniors’ Bowling League in Bennington and tending to his hilltop home.

In addition to his first wife and parents, Gordon is predeceased by his stepson, John Karl Schneider III, and his nephew, George Voss.

He is survived by his wife, Edythe, of 24 years, his stepchildren Dan Schneider of White Plains, Nancy Schneider of Danbury, Conn., and Brad Schneider of American Canyon, Calif.; his three grandchildren, Kaela, Dylan and Grace; his cousin, Gean Tennant Van Aken of Dennis, Mass.; his niece, four grandnieces, his grandnephew and their children.

Friends and relatives may call at the Brewster Funeral Home, 34 Park Place, Manchester Center, on Monday, Jan. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Manchester Rescue Squad or Fire Department c/o Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester, VT 05255 are appreciated.
