Grace Gilbert 1930-2010 BENNINGTON Grace (Gay) Gilbert 80, widow of the Reverend Cass Gilbert 3rd, a resident of Pippin Knoll passed away peacefully on Saturday November 13, 2010 at her home in the company of her loving family. Mrs. Gilbert was born on May 1, 1930 in New York City, she was the daughter of Roynon and Grace (Coffin) Cholmeley-Jones. She graduated from the Chapin School in New York City and from Tufts University in Medford, with a degree in Physical Education. She was married to Cass Gilbert 3rd in 1952, he died January 22, 2009. They had lived in Wilton, Conn., until 1969 when her husband entered the Methodist Ministry. After that they lived in Salem, Ticonderoga and Greenwich, N.Y. and then in Bennington, while serving these local churches. Following semi-retirement they moved to Dorset until 2001 when they returned to Bennington. During the time her husband was active in churches, Mrs. Gilbert taught physical education in Salem as well as starting Girl Scouts in that town. She then became involved in preschools, founding one in Greenwich and Bennington. She also coached girls' sports in Salem, Ticonderoga and Bennington. Following retirement in 2004 she volunteered in Bennington schools and served on the Board of Ride and Shine, a therapeutic riding program. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Her children and friends will always remember her grace, her courage, her dignity and her sense of fair play. Mrs. Gilbert enjoyed biking, cross-country skiing, spinning and knitting, gardening, her many animals, especially her dogs, but most of all, time spent with her family. She is survived by her five children Cass A. Gilbert and his wife Beatrice of North Yarmouth, Maine, Elizabeth (Betsy) Pryor and her husband Douglas of Winston-Salem, N.C., Sarah (Sally) Bisaccio and her husband Kevin of Bennington, Jeannette (Jeannie) Allyson and her husband Russ of Durham, N.H. and Julia Gilbert and her husband Nathan Cleveland of Charlotte, Vt. and 12 grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday November 17 at 10 a.m. at St. Peters Episcopal Church, burial will follow in the family lot in Park lawn Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
