BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Grace S. Gross, wife of the late Louis F. Gross, a longtime resident of Bennington, died peacefully at Crescent Manor Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006.

Born in Rutland, May 17, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Orrin W. and Helen (Fraser) Sumner. She was a graduate of the former Bennington High School class of 1924, and went on to receive her nurse’s training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, where she graduated in 1929. Mr. and Mrs. Gross were married in New York City.

In earlier years, she was employed at Mount Sinai Hospital and, after returning to Bennington, she was employed at the former Putnam Memorial Hospital. She touched many lives during her nursing career, which spanned more than years. At the time of her retirement, she was the charge nurse for the maternity ward.

She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Bennington and a member of the Bennington County Nurses Association. Mrs. Gross supported many Bennington charities. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was known for her beautiful rose gardens. She also enjoyed traveling with family.

Survivors include two daughters, Geralyn Barschdorf of Pittsfield, Mass., and Diane E. Cardinal of Stonington, Conn.; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was very pleased to meet her namesake and latest great-granddaughter, Grace, who arrived in November 2005. Mrs. Gross was predeceased by two sisters and four brothers, Alice Cherry, Jessie Maclay, Claude Sumner, Guy Sumner, Willard Sumner and Lawrence Sumner.

The funeral will be held from Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Tuesday morning, Jan. 24, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. David Jinno, pastor of the North Bennington Baptist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, on Monday, Jan. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
