Obituary Condolences

LATHAM, N.Y. -- Grover C. “Jake” Williams, 88, of Mill Road, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003 in Glens Falls. Born Aug. 12, 1915 in Port St. Joe, Fla., he was the son of Dessie May Booth and Grover C. Williams I and the husband of the late Marian M. Williams, who died in 1997. They had been married for 59 years. He had been a resident of Latham for the past 35 years.

Mr. Williams served in World War II under Genl. George S. Patton in Europe as a platoon sergeant and fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he was awarded a Purple Heart and numberous other awards for his valor.

He was a retail merchant, having managed F.W. Woolworth stores throughout his career. In later years, he was a department manager at Montgomery Wards in Colonie before retiring. He was an active member of the Rotary International during his career. After retirement, he enjoyed gardening and driving to Florida each winter to spend several moths with his relatives and friends.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan Davis of Queensbury and one son, Steven D. Williams of Glens Falls; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two siters, Edna Jones and Thelma Stant of Florida.

He was predeceased by his son, Grover C. Williams III, who died in 1982 and also two sisters, Dorothy W. Rogers and Sadie Ratcliff of Florida.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003 at 11 a.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Kamer Road, Colonie. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, Dec. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. Interment will be in Memory’s Garden, Colonie.
