Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Gwendolyn Helene Abbey, 79, widow of Paul B. Abbey, a resident of Jefferson Avenue, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation following a long illness.

Born in New York City on June 17, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Emelie (Leiman) Braaf. She received her early education in the New York City schools and was a graduate of Hunter College in New York City.

Mr. and Mrs. Abbey were married in New York City on Aug. 25, 1946. Mr. Abbey died in 1987.

For many years Mrs. Abbey was employed as an insurance adjuster with the Insurance Company of North America. She was the first female adjuster employed by the company. She was a volunteer at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center and had also been active in the American Association of University Women.

Mrs. Abbey always loved Vermont. She also was very fond of animals and adopted many strays over the years. She will be missed by her three cats, Ranna, Holly and Willow. Her longtime faithful companion, her late dog Max, died recently.

Survivors include a daughter, Carla Schwartz of Bennington; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Schwartz of Bennington and Jillian Schwartz of New York City; and a sister, Adel Braaf, of New York City.

At Mrs. Abbey’s request private graveside services will be held at the family site in Middlebury.
