BENNINGTON -- Gwendolyn F. Baxter, daughter of the late J. Sheldon Fosdick and Isabelle J. Jackson died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004 at the age of 95 at Crescent Manor Care Centers. She was the widow of the late David N. Baxter and former resident of West Arlington.

She was born in Jamaica, N.Y. on Oct. 3, 1909. She graduated from the Cathedral School of St. Mary in Garden City, N.Y. Upon graduation, she studied art in Florence, Italy in 1927 for a year before returning to New York.

She married David N. Baxter at Kew Gardens, N.Y. in 1934. During World War II, she worked in Rhode Island while her husband served in the Navy in the Pacific. After the war they lived in Massapequa, Levitown and Smithtown, N.Y. before retiring to Vermont.

She was the eldest daughter of J. Sheldon Fosdick, councilor at law and founder and first president of the Jamaica National Bank which became Midland Marine Grace Trust Company.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Stephen W. Fosdick, Medfield, Mass., Penelope N. Saddlemire, Shushan, N.Y., H. Virginia Stevenson of Tarzana, Calif., Sheldon Neilson of Norwalk, Conn., David Fosdick of Montgomery Village, Md., John Fosdick of Newark, Del.and Michael D. Costello of Chesapeake, Va. and previously deceased Timothy J. Fosdick. At the request of the family, funeral services will be private. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington.
