RICHFIELD, Pa. -- Mr. Harold A. “Hal” Benner, 78, of Snyder Heights, Richfield, Pa., died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at The Zendt Home, Richfield, where he had briefly resided following his admission there from The Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove, Pa.

He was born on March 12, 1929, at Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pa., a son of the late Harvey and Ida (Gelnett) Benner.

He was preceded by his first wife, the former Maxine Brubaker. He later married the former Ferne I. (Shirk) Troxell, who survives.

Harold retired from J.C. Penney Co. after 41 years total employment. He began as a stockroom worker in Sunbury, Pa., and worked in various stores in Pennsylvania, New York and Vermont. He was a store manager in St. Albans, Vt., for 11 years, then opened a store in Bennington, Vt., where he worked until he retired in 1989.

Harold graduated from Freeburg High School in 1947.

He was a member of the Richfield Mennonite Church. He was a also a member of the Trinity Presbyterian (formerly Community Covenant Church) in St. Albans, Vt. and the Christian Missionary Alliance in Bennington, Vt.

While in St. Albans, Harold hosted weekly radio show “ Viewpoint”, discussing current issues. Harold also served on the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Rotary Club in Vermont.

He loved his family and spending time with them. Enjoyment was in spending free time outdoors hunting and fishing .

In addition to his wife, Ferne, he is survived by three children, Michael Benner of Port Trevorton, Pa., Pam Cohen and her husband, Ron, of New Berlin, Wisc., and, Todd Benner and his wife, Kim, of Bennington, Vt.; a stepson, Tim Troxell and his wife, Eunice, of Selinsgrove, Pa.; grandchildren: Eric, Rachel, and Rebecca Cohen, Alicia, Emily, Elijah, Ian, and Hope Benner; two step-grandchildren: Paige and Sarah Troxell; three brothers, Herbert Benner and his wife, Betty of Camp Hill, Pa., Maynard “Jake” Benner and his wife, Leatrice “Leaty,” of Dauphin, Pa., and Reno Benner and his wife Irma, of Lewisburg, Pa.; three sisters, Arlene Sierer and her husband, Marlin, of Selinsgrove, Pa.; Orpha Lyter and her husband, Roy, of Richfield, Pa., and, Naomi Goodling, of Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Also surviving are nieces and nephews.

Mr. Benner was preceded by a granddaughter, Michaela Benner; and by three brothers, Nevin, Leonard and Warren Benner. Also by a sister, Charlotte Ritter.

The family will receive friends for the viewing on Monday evening, Oct. 15, 2007, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. all at The Richfield Mennonite Church, Church St. Richfield, Pa. Officiating will be Pastor Paul J. Beech, III and assisting will be Pastor Jerry R. O’Connell.

Burial will follow the services in the Richfield Union Cemetery.

The family respectfully requests memorial contribution be made in loving memory of Mr. Benner to The American Cancer Society, Central Susquehanna Unit, 1948 E. 3rd. Street, Williamsport, PA. 17701-3945 or the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Inc., 9366 Route 35, Mt. Pleasant Mills, has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
