BENNINGTON -- Harold Lewis Cross, 79, a former resident of Bennington and more recently of Essex Junction, passed away on Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Harold was born on Feb. 13, 1928, in Bennington, son of the late Burton R. and Ella May (Potter) Cross. He was a graduate of Bennington High School class of 1946. He served his country honorably in the Army from 1950 - 1952.

On May 14, 1955 he married the former Elizabeth Ramsdell whom predeceased him January 25, 1998.

Harold retired in 1990 from the Merchants Bank after 37 years of dedicated service in the banking profession. He was a director of National Grange Mutual Insurance Company from 1972 to 1991. He has also been a proud, long-time, active member of the Grange where he held various offices at both the local and state level. He was also a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Essex Junction where he was very involved in group functions. Before residing in Essex Junction he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Bennington. Harold was very active in both the Bennington and Essex Junction communities and served on many committees in these communities. Harold will be greatly missed by all of those who had the true pleasure to have known and loved him.

Survivors include a son, Alan Cross and wife Annette of Essex Junction; a daughter Jane Cross of Dalton, Mass.; Edward B. Cross and wife Marion of Shaftsbury; a sister, Lillian Wood and husband Roger of Arlington; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Harold was predeceased by a brother, Robert W. Cross.

Following visiting hours on Tuesday and funeral services on Wednesday in Essex Junction, transfer will be made to the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington where funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 10, at 1 p.m.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will follow in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.
