BENNINGTON -- Harold E. Burgess, 75, a resident of Beech Street, Bennington, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation following a long illness.

Born in Potter Hill, N.Y., Dec. 18, 1930, he was the son of the late Milton and Isabelle (Belisle) Burgess. He received his education in the Bennington schools.

Mr. Burgess was a Army veteran of the Korean War. He married the former Rose Bentley on Aug. 12, 1951, in Bennington. She died April 11, 1989. Harold later married Joyce Conklin on May 2, 1992, at Sacred Heart-St. Francis deSales Church in Bennington.

In earlier years he was employed at the former Remco Co. and later at Bijur Lubricating Co. for many years until the time of his retirement. Harold was a member of both American Legion Post 13 and a lifetime member of the Bennington Elks Lodge 567. An avid turkey hunter, he also enjoyed fishing, boating and camping. Harold’s fondest pastime was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Burgess, of Bennington; a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Deborah Burgess, of Shaftsbury; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Robert Muir, of Bennington. A daughter, Linda Burgess, of Bennington and a daughter and son in law, Barbara and W. Charles Brambley of Bennington; five grandchildren, Sarah Bowen, Raina Burgess, Geoffrey and Scott Muir and Holly Burgess; four great-grandchildren; eight stepchildren and their spouses, Ernest and Sarah Conklin, of Raymond, N.H., Charles and Heather Conklin, of Colbert, Wash., Willis and Dorothy Conklin, of Arlington, Gladys Conklin of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Lori and Robert Brace, of Arlington, Cheryl Conklin and David Conklin, both of Bennington, and James Conklin, of Cambridge, N.Y.; several step-grandchildren; a brother, William Burgess of Guilford, N.H.; his stepmother, Bessie Burgess of Tinmouth; four half-brothers, Robert Burgess of Shaftsbury, Timothy and Ronald Burgess, both of Bennington, and Kevin Burgess of Colchester; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Harold was predeceased by a sister, Nellie Butteroff.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home and Son Funeral Home, Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at 11 a.m

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Oct. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
