1927 - 2015 BENNINGTON Harold F. "Smokey" Fair, 88, a resident of Soule Street, died Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center surrounded by his family. Born in Bennington, VT March 11, 1927 he was the son of the late Clifford and Anna (Fraher) Fair. He received his education in Bennington. Smokey was a World War II Navy Veteran and was a plank owner of the USS Midway when the ship was commissioned. He married the former Patricia Kelley on October 20, 1951 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Pat died October 7, 1997 In earlier years, Smokey was employed at the Bijur Lubricating Company for 40 years. He retired in September of 1989. He was a longtime member of the Stark Hose Company, Bennington Fire Department, the Bennington Elks Lodge 567, American Legion Post 13 and the VFW Post 1332 in Bennington. Smokey enjoyed working in his yard, gardening and taking care of his flower beds. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets and the Boston Celtics. His favorite pastime had always been time spent with friends and family. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Fair and Joseph McClister of Beverly Hills, FL, Terese and Michael Comar and Lynn and Mark Debay of Bennington; a granddaughter, Tracy Moyer and her partner, Shannon Simmons of Bennington; a step-grandson and his wife, Eric and Lindsey Comar of Arlington; two great-grandchildren, Reece and Riley Moyer of Bennington; three sisters-in-law, Joan Spofford of Rotterdam, NY, Dorothy McGurn of Bennington and Sondra Kelley of San Diego, CA; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Fair was pre deceased by a brother, Clifford Fair. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Monday, May 4, 2015 at 1 p.m. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. If friends desire contributions in memory of Mr. Fair may be made to either the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Activities Fund at the Vermont Veterans Home through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
