Harold L. Harrington

NORTH BENNINGTON -- Mr. Harold L. Harrington, 83, a resident of River Road, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, following a brief illness.

He was born in Bennington, Nov. 7, 1922. He was the son of the late Leslie C. and Gertrude (Austin) Harrington. He received his education in North Bennington and was a 1940 graduate of North Bennington High School.

He married the former Mary Ellen Murphy April 24, 1948, in North Bennington.

In earlier years, Harold worked for his father on the family farm, where he was involved in custom combining.

In 1965 Harold and his brother Donald Harrington purchased the family farm until 1987 when they sold the dairy farm. After selling the farm, Harold continued farming hay and corn.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Green Mountain Farm Group, the U.V.M. Extension Advisory Board and the National Bottle Collecting Association.

Harold enjoyed collecting milk bottles and was especially fond of his border collie Arthur. Harold also enjoyed playing cards and different types of puzzles.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Harrington, of North Bennington; a son, Harold L. Harrington Jr., of North Bennington; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Richard Bush, of Bennington; three grandchildren, Adam Bush and his wife, Jennifer, of Bennington, Mathew Bush, of Bennington, and Peter Bush, of Bennington; a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Bush, of Bennington; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Harrington was predeceased by a brother, Donald Harrington.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Penny Rich Smith and the Rev. Michael Demasi officiating.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Saint John’s Cemetery North Bennington.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
