1930-2013 BENNINGTON Harold J. Marshall, age 83 a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home and formerly of North Pownal Road in Pownal, died on Wednesday morning, October 30, 2013 following a long illness. He was born in the Bronx, NY on October 23, 1930 and was the son of the late Harry and Eva (Wood) Marshall. He was raised in New Jersey and North Adams, MA. He married the former Norma Irene Simon on March 5, 1955 in North Adams. Mrs Marshall survives. Mr. Marshall served in the Marine Corp during the Korean War from 1950 until 1954. He had been employed at General Cable. He also was very involved in police work, and has worked as the Powanl Constable, a Bennington County Deputy Sheriff and with the Vermont State Police in Pownal. Harold has also been a private detective and Security Officer at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. He also worked at the Green Mountain Race Track for several years. He especially loved spending time with his family and being outdoors. He was a member of the American Legion Post #90 of Pownal. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Brian Marshall and his wife Lori of Pownal, and Melissa Wicks, and her husband Jason of Shaftsbury, VT. and a son-in-law Stan Kelson. He leaves several grandchildren: Wayne King and his wife Charity, Amber Kelson, Trevor Marshall, Kyle Marshall and his wife Elicia, Chad Carroll, Jacob Dean and his wife Neshanne, Shelby Wicks and MaKenzie Wicks, as well as four great grandchildren; Colin King, Brayden Marshall, Aislyn Carroll, and Adisyn Marshall. He has one sister, Hazel Crosby of North Adams, MA. Harold is also survived by one sister-in-law, Rose McKenney, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Doris Simon, and brothers-in-law Herman Simon and Leo Simon. He is predeceased by three daughters: Debbie, Rosemarie and Kathleen. FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 2, at 1:00PM at the North Pownal Cemetery on Rt 346, with Kenneth Coonradt, chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating. Military honors will be offered as part of the services. There are no calling hours scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home Residents' Activities Fund or the Vermont State Police K-9 Unit, Shaftsbury Barracks, through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, Vermont 05201.
