HAROLD SHEPARD 1925 - 2008 ESSEX JUNCTION Harold J. Shepard, 82, of Essex Junction died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at home after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. Born in South Royalton on Aug. 24, 1925, son of Earl and Blanche Hazard Shepard, He graduated from Castleton Teachers College in 1950, and received a master's degree in Special Education from Eastern Michigan University in 1968. Harold served 29 months during World War II with the Army in the European Theater with the 78th "Lightning" Division. He received three battle stars for participating in the Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He taught at Peoples Academy, Newport High School, The Red Brick School in Shaftsbury, Mt. Anthony Union High School, and retired from teaching in 1992 from Spaulding High School. He always said that he had never met a kid that he didn't like and enjoyed teaching all his students, especially those with special needs. In addition to teaching, he owned and operated Shepard's Mobil Gas Station in North Bennington from 1956 to 1960. Among his interests and activities were: Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 328, North Bennington, a member of the Lions Club in Norshaft, a volunteer fireman and a trustee for the Village of North Bennington and, most recently, a treasurer for the Brickyard Condos in Essex Junction. Harold loved to travel, was an avid RVer, visited all 50 states along with all the Canadian Provinces, and also made trips to Europe. Harold was a longtime supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, the local Vermont Lake Monsters and the New England Patriots. He leaves his wife, the former Eleanor Griffith, whom he married June 20, 1953, in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Richmond. Besides his wife, he leaves two children, Ronald and his partner, Lois Hrabowecky, of Williston, and Katherine of Newton, Mass.; two grandchildren, Czarina and Carissa; siblings Robert Shepard of Sunapee, N.H., and Hazel Shepard Welch of Tunbridge, Vt., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and by a brother, Kenneth. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, May 1, 2008, at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church in Essex Junction, with burial following in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Richmond. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, April 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at GIFFORD FUNERAL HOME, 22 Depot St., Richmond. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Special Olympics Vermont, P.O.
