Harold Smith, Jr.

1933 - 2014 DANBY Harold E. Smith, Jr. died peacefully on Nov. 6 at the VA Hospital in White River Junction, Vt., surrounded by his loving family. A resident of Danby, he was born to Harold E. Smith, Sr. and Mary Louise Smith on Mar. 7, 1933. At the age of 17, he met, fell in love with, and later married Marlene "DeDe" Ingram. Next month, they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He is survived by DeDe and their children, Amy Goodfellow and husband, Richard, of Arlington, Marlene "Marcy" Chicoine of Rutland, Melissa Barthel of Manchester, and Harold M. Smith and wife, Elizabeth Britt, of Northampton, Mass. He was very proud of all his children, as well as his grandchildren, Elizabeth Goodfellow and husband, Hardeep Sidhu, Alexander Goodfellow, Eric Goodfellow, Thatcher Friant and wife, Marguerite Dibble, Margaux Friant, Ashley Audy, Hayden Audy, and Lily Audy. Harold was an intelligent, kind, and thoughtful man of many interests and talents, including playing the banjo in the "Better Than Nothing Band" at the Otter Creek Campground. He loved his home, the outdoors, and animals. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Second Chance Animal Shelter in Shaftsbury, Vt. in memory of his beloved dog, Chloe. FUNERAL NOTICE: A private military burial will take place at the Scottsville cemetery in Danby on Friday, Nov. 28.
