Obituary Condolences

EAST ARLINGTON -- Harriet Squires Christiansen, 81, a long-time resident of East Arlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, in Bennington. Harriet was born in New Lebanon, N.Y., on May 26, 1926, the daughter of Everett and Alice (Ward) Squires.

She was the valedictorian graduate of Arlington Memorial High School in 1944 and graduated suma cum laude with a bachelor’s of nursing degree from the University of Vermont in 1949. After a fellowship to Vanderbilt University she continued graduate studies at Cornell Medical Center in New York City.

She returned to Vermont and married Brunell G. Christiansen on Sept. 23, 1950, at the Federated Church in East Arlington.

She resumed her clinical career at North Adams Regional Hospital and took a brief hiatus from 1952 to 1959 to raise her children. In late 1959 she became the charge nurse in the maternity department at Putnam Memorial Hospital and in 1960 began as an instructor at the school of nursing where she remained until her retirement in 1986.

During her long career as a nursing educator she never refused an opportunity to further her knowledge and skills as an educator. She traveled extensively to many college and university medical centers and in 1983 participated in a Vermont Department of Education sponsored trip to Russia to evaluate nursing practices and education. Harriet was recognized in 1984 as Nursing Educator of the Year for her dedication to nursing and education. This award was presented to her in Seattle, Wash.

During retirement she remained connected to the nursing community by reviewing and editing nursing textbooks. She was a life-long member of the Federated Church of East Arlington and a soloist in their choir. She enjoyed music and playing the piano. She was a voracious reader and crossword puzzle addict.

Survivors include twin daughters, Kristine C. and her husband Stephen L. Bushee of Clarendon, Kathleen C. and her husband Clem E. Morse of Sunderland; and one son, Brian Christiansen of Sunderland; six granddaughters and three grandsons and one great granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Brunell, in 1986, and their youngest son, David, in 1982. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Zita S. Griswold and Ivah S. Arnold, and her brother, Paul Squires.

There will be no calling hours and interment will be private.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, you love and appreciate your family and friends and donate to a charity of your choice.
