Hazel A. Dawley Bennett

1918-2009 CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. Hazel A. Dawley Bennett, 91, formerly of Saint Patrick's Lane, died peacefully, Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 at the Hoosick Falls Health Center where she had lived since last December.

Hazel was the widow of Ward Dawley and Melford "Tommy" Bennett.

Born Saturday, Mar. 30, 1918, on the family farm in White Creek, she was the daughter of Walter C. and Florence Shaw Hunt.

She left school before graduating to help on the farm while her brothers went off to war. Then she joined the Army where she drove in the motor pool. She loved telling stories how the officers took pity on her, a "country girl" and drove her around Boston.

While raising her family, Hazel worked in various local factories including Nancy Shoe, Reese Mills, Bentley Seeds and Asgrow Seed Company, which she retired from.

Hazel liked to crochet, do crossword puzzles and other word games and play cards. She was an avid "people watcher". She loved feeding and watching her squirrels. She enjoyed country music.

Along with her husbands, she is predeceased by nine siblings, Gladys Guile, Edith, Ellen, Ralph, Arthur, Frank, Fred, Lewis and Clarence Hunt.

Survivors include five children and their spouses, Patricia Moon and husband, Jerry, of Bennington, Ellen Washburn and husband, Eli, of Cambridge, N.Y., Paul Dawley and wife, Barbara, of Buckeye, Ariz., Charles Dawley and wife, Dot, of Hoosick Falls, N.Y. and Kathryn Bassett and husband, Steven, of Greenwich; a brother, Walter Hunt of Ohio; 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, including Katey, Hazel's special "dancing girl" who always made her smile. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends and relatives are invited to call on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the ACKLEY & ROSS FUNERAL HOME, 73 West Main street, Cambridge.

There will be a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jane Baker of Embury United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwich Cemetery where she will be buried with her first husband.
