BENNINGTON -- Heather Elizabeth Bemis, 39, of Grant Street, died Monday Feb. 5, 2007, at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Adams, Mass., on Dec. 20, 1967, the daughter of Betsy Aikin Bemis and the late Kenneth P. Bemis, she attended grammar school in Richmond, Mass., and was a 1985 graduate of Taconic High School.

Following high school Ms. Bemis moved to San Jose, Calif., where she was employed as a nanny for seven years. After returning to the Berkshires in 1992 she became a certified nurses aid and was employed at Springside of Pittsfield and later at nursing homes in the Bennington area.

During her illness she participated in cancer research and treatment fund raising campaigns and organized a “Mother’s Day Tea” in 2005 at the Cancer Center at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She enjoyed crafts and was a lover of animals.

Ms. Bemis is survived by her mother of Richmond; her birth mother, Nancy Billings Yawn, and her husband, Charles Yawn, of North Bennington; one son, Taylor M. Koste of Bennington; one brother, Timothy P. Bemis of Centerville, Ohio; and one sister, Laurie C. Albert of Pittsfield, Mass.

She is also survived by her step-father Charles Yawn of North Bennington, her aunt Eunice L. Bemis of Bangor, Maine, her sister-in-law Catherine I. Bemis of Centerville, Ohio, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted Monday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. at Trinity Church in Lenox by the Rev. Stephen P. Booth, Rector. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Lenox.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Heather’s memory may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in care of the Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main Street, Lenox, Mass., 01240.
