Obituary Condolences

Helen Lucas Campbell

1915-2009 MORRISVILLE Helen Lucas Campbell, 94, died on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville, with family members at her side.

She was born on Jul. 24, 1915 to Eugene Stuart Lucas and Elizabeth Boehm Lucas, immigrants from central Europe.

She lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., attending Erasmus Hall High School and Adelphi College.

Helen married J. Duncan Campbell on Oct. 15, 1938. They were married 65 years.

They lived in North Bennington, where she was an active volunteer in the community at Putnam Memorial Hospital (Southwestern Vermont Medical Center), volunteering as a Grey Lady for an amazing 7000 hours, and in the international student program at Bennington College, where she placed students in the Fulbright Scholarship Orientation program in homes in the community.

She was also the Bennington County treasurer for the Vermont Symphony Orchestra for many years, on the Bennington Board of Civil Authority, and active in the Second Congregational Church in Bennington.

She knitted hundreds of baby sweaters for the hospital and hats and sweaters for family and friends.

Helen was a great cook, noted for her yellow cake with chocolate frosting, raspberry trifle, crabapple jelly, and creative soups and casseroles. She made endless batches of Toll House cookies and hosted the entire extended family for Thanksgiving for over 40 years. Helen was an avid Scrabble player and took great pleasure in recent games with her grandchildren. She loved word games, working crossword puzzles and Double Crostics. She had a great sense of humor and showed a keen wit throughout her life. She loved her garden and battled with vigor the annual woodchuck and rabbit attack. Helen was a lot of fun.

Soon after Duncan's death on Nov. 22, 2003, Helen moved to Stowe to be closer to her sons. She was an active member of the Copley Woodlands Community and enjoyed her years there.

Her surviving family includes Alan Campbell of Huntington and his wife, Heidi Racht; and grandsons, Mason, Abbott and Owen Rachampbell; daughter-in-law, Carol West-Campbell, of Stowe; grandson, Gregory Campbell and fiancée, Sara Weber, of Williston; granddaughter, Cricket Kadoch and her husband, Aaron, of Bend, Ore., and great-grandsons, Aiden and Joshua Kadoch; sister-in-law, Virginia Thomas, of Bakersfield; John and Lynn Cowles of Voorheesville, N.Y.; nephews, Niel Thomas of Anchorage, Ala.; Duncan Campbell Thomas and his wife, Nina, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Peter Campbell and his wife, Mary, of Greensboro, N.C.; nieces, Susan Campbell Dawes and her husband, Robert, of Swarthmore, Pa.; Betsy Hart and her husband, Alan, of Bakersfield.

Her son, Stuart Campbell, of Stowe predeceased her in Dec. 2008.
