Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Helen E. Smith, 88, died Thursday evening, August 12 , 2004, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation.

Born in Bethel on May 22, 1916, she was the daughter of the late William Smith and Maude Parmeter. She grew up in Bethel; after graduating from Bethel High School, she relocated to New Jersey to work in a private home.

She moved to Bennington in 1943 to help care for her brother’s children while his wife recovered from a serious illness. She was employed at the former E Z Mills and then at Thompson Manufacturing Company, from which she retired in 1971.

She was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and worked on many bazaars as well as other church functions. She participated in many walk-a-thons well into her late 70s. A caring person, she collected returnable bottles and donated the money to the American Red Cross and local elementary schools to be used to purchase clothing for needy children. Helen is survived by eight nieces and nephews and many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her brothers Richard Smith of Milton and W. Howard Smith of Bradford, and a sister-in-law, Cecile Smith of Bradford. Helen was loved and admired by those who knew her, and she will be greatly missed. Graveside services will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery in Rochester at the convenience of the family.

Memorial gifts may be made in her memory to either the Bennington Chapter of the American Red Cross or First United Methodist Church in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
