Helen M. Fraher
1922 - 2010 BENNINGTON VT Mrs. Helen M. Fraher, 87, widow of Michael Fraher, Sr., a former resident of Putnam Street, Bennington, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at Birchwood Terrace in Burlington, following a long illness.
Born in Bennington Sept. 4, 1922, daughter of Edward and Margaret Downer Knapp, Helen received her education in the Bennington schools and was a 1941 graduate of Bennington High School.
Mr. & Mrs. Fraher were married at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on Aug. 7, 1943. Mr. Fraher died Sept. 20, 1979.
Helen was employed for many years as a telephone operator and supervisor at New England Telephone Company in Bennington. She retired in 1984. In earlier years, Helen had operated a daycare service in her home. In 1999, Helen was recognized with the Presidents Award for Voluntary Service from the president of New England Telephone Company for her many acts of volunteerism on behalf of the company.
A member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington, Helen served as a lector for many years. She was a member of the former Altar Rosary Society at the church and Court St. Andrew, Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers, the Green Mountain Hiking Club and the Vermont Extension Homemaker Club.
Helen enjoyed crocheting, reading, hiking, cross-country skiing, world traveling and time spent with her family. Helen was very proud of her Irish heritage and visited Ireland on four separate occasions, where she was toured about by several cousins. In 1999, Helen was fortunate to be able to take her three children, their spouses and a granddaughter to Ireland.
She leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Michael Caslin of North Bennington and Dody and Wesley Ruland of Burlington; a son and daughter-in-law, Denis and Deanna Fraher of Clifton Park, NY; six grandchildren, Kathy Fraher O'Brien and her husband, Willie, of Pasadena, Md., Colleen Caslin of Brewster, Mass., Michael Caslin and his wife, Bobbie, of Bennington, Kelley Caslin Flynn and her husband, Lorcan, of Brookline, Mass., and Shayla and Kaitlyn Ruland of Williston; three great-grandchildren, Darcy and Kerry O'Brien and Annie Caslin; a brother, Larry Knapp, of Bennington; a very special friend, Jack O'Boyle of Bridport, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Helen was predeceased by a son, Thomas Fraher, a daughter, Mary Lou Fraher , a step-son, Michael Fraher Jr. and by four sisters and two brothers, Agnes Powers, Catherine Deery, Grace Knapp, Irene Joly, Richard and Edward Knapp.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Monday, April 19, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
