SHUSHAN, N.Y. -- Helen Gilchrest Doane, 94, a life long resident of Shushan, died peacefully at the home of her daughter, Donna Hannibal, on Thursday, April 22, 2003. She was the widow of John W. Doane, who died in 1990.

Born Sunday, Nov. 29, 1908, in Shushan, she was the oldest of the 10 children of Clifford and Edith (Jackson) Gilchrest. She attended school in Salem and then went to the Allen’s School of Commerce in Troy.

Helen was a wonderful seamstress and worked for many years at C.A. Baltz in Salem.

She was the oldest member of the Shushan United Methodist Church and in earlier years, was active in the women’s church group. She was a member of the Salem Senior Citizens.

Helen enjoyed sewing and other activities but being with her family was what was most important to her.

She is predeceased by two sisters, Edna Steele and Florence “Slats” Gilchrest, and four brothers, Gerald, Harold, Kenneth and William.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Donna and Melford Hannibal and Elaine and James McKeighan, all of Shushan; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles “Pook,” George, and Richard, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

Helen will be buried at Woodlands Cemetery with her husband.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 9 a.m. at the Shushan United Methodist Church.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Shushan United Methodist Church, Gayle Shaw, Shushan, NY 12873.
