BENNINGTON -- Helen M. Smith, 98, formerly of Danforth Street in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., died early Monday morning at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Helen was born in Pittston, Pa., on July 4, 1907, the daughter of John and Anne Kufta. She received her education in the Pittston schools. Helen moved to Hoosick Falls in February of 1997 from Boca Raton, Fla., where she was a hospitality entrepreneur, owning a hotel for many years.

Upon moving to Hoosick Falls, she became a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She liked to travel a lot and was an avid reader.

She loved sewing and interior decorating and was responsible for decorating the Roxy Theatre in New York City.

Helen is survived by her son, Frank R. Kusala of Hoosick Falls, and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Kusala, who died in 1957, and her second husband, James T. Smith, who died in 1983.

At the request of the family, services will be private. There are no visiting hours.
