Helen Pezzulich Obituary
Helen Elizabeth Pezzulich

1939-2013 BENNINGTON Helen Elizabeth Pezzulich, a long time resident of Bennington, Vermont, died peacefully of complications of cancer on Thursday September 5, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Rhinebeck, New York, on October 19, 1939, a first generation American. The only child of Anna Maria (Weddehage) and Anton Hunfeld, who both emigrated from Germany to the US before World War II; she grew up on the Vincent Astor Estate in Rhinebeck. She later lived in Millerton, New York. After moving to New York City and graduating from Cornell University School of Nursing, she met her husband, Robert. She was working as a nurse at New York Hospital- Cornell Medical Center and he was a medical student at Cornell. They married and had two children, Lisa and Matthew. She and her family moved to Bennington in 1973 after her husband's tour of duty in the Air Force during Vietnam. Involved in community service, Helen volunteered thousands of hours over the years, especially serving as an EMT on the then all volunteer Bennington Rescue Squad for 10 years, logging in 1,400 calls. Helen was a beloved mother, daughter and spouse. She enjoyed teaching her children about the natural world. Helen cared deeply for her mother, who came to live with her family for 14 years after the death of her father. She was also a great support to her husband who worked many long hours over many long years. As the only American in her family outside of Germany, Helen enjoyed frequent visits there with her aunts, uncles and many cousins. She also enjoyed international travel to more than 35 countries, her favorite being the island of Borneo. Happy pursuits included tennis, biking, hiking, gardening and playing bridge. Her four grandchildren provided her with so much pleasure and pride. Helen always had an adventurous spirit and skydived at age 70 with her husband and son, jumping from 13,500 feet. In addition to her husband of 49 plus years, she is survived by one daughter, Lisa Marie Pezzulich, and two grand daughters, Rachel and Katelyn Hemmer, of Shaftsbury, Vermont, and one son, Matthew Carl Pezzulich and two grandsons, Kevin and Brian Pezzulich, of Natick, Massachusetts. She also leaves her dear friend, Jan Goodrich, and many cousins in Germany. FUNERAL NOTICE: The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church on Saturday September 14 at 10am.
