BENNINGTON -- Helen K. Proud, 92, wife of John P. Proud, a longtime resident of Pleasant Valley Road, Bennington, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at Crescent Manor Care Centers following a long illness.

Born in Bennington May 21, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Nora (Leonard) Kinney. Helen grew up in Pleasant Valley and was a graduate of the Pleasant Valley School and later St. Joseph’s Business College.

John and Helen were married on Oct. 11, 1939, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.

In earlier years she worked in various insurance offices and as a telephone operator at New England Telephone and also as a telephone operator and in the post office at Bennington College. Following the birth of her first child, Helen remained at home with her children as they grew. In later years she was associated with her husband at Adams Clothes Shop where she was in charge of the ladies department.

She loved to dance and travel. John and Helen traveled extensively throughout the United States and had traveled to Ireland to visit relatives.

Survivors include her husband, John P. Proud of Bennington; three daughters, Mary Specht and her husband William of Charlotte, N.C., Anne Moylan of Shrewsbury, Mass. and Julie Ray and her husband David of Lynn, Mass.; two sons, John Proud of Barton and Timothy Proud of Bennington; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins. Helen was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers, Julia Nash, Loretta Kinney, Anne Kinney, Thomas, Frank, Joseph and Leonard Kinney.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer, and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be offered Sunday evening.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
