Helena Powell Obituary
Helena F. Coyne Powell passed away Monday, June 5 in Amarillo, TX., after a long illness.

Helena was born in Bennington, VT., the oldest child of the late William Coyne and the former Eleanor Mathers. She received her education at Bennington College then enlisted in the US Navy after graduation. She was chosen with honor to model the new US Naval service uniform for women while at basic in Great Lakes, ILL. She was justifiably proud of her military service being a life time active member of the Women Veterans of America.

Mother of four: Kathy Armstrong, James Powell, Mary Kiser, Betty Tyler. Helena married Lacy Powell in 1964, blessed to this union a son and daughter, Eddie Powell and Stephanie Powell. She was a beloved grandmother to 16 grandchildren and great grandmother to 23 great grandchildren.

She lived a challenging life including the burdens of the great Depression and World War II. Helena enjoying spending time with her family had a variety of interests and hobbies. She was an avid reader, loved travel and bird watching.

She faced the last days of her life with the same grace and dignity which defined her nearly 90 years on Earth. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving Helena are three brothers, Edward, Ralph and Thomas Coyne all of Bennington and one sister Kathryn Brown of Randlett, Ok, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded by her parents, Sisters Mary "Pat" Livingston, Gertrude Estes, brothers, Milton, Jack, Stephen and Gregory Coyne.

SERVICES: Graveside services will be held in Amarillo at Memorial Park with full military honors. Contributions may be sent to the Women Veterans of America.
