Obituary Condolences

GRAND ISLE -- Henry David Van Dine, 60, of Pearl Street, died peacefully Tuesday morning Dec. 21, 2004, at his home in Grand Isle in the presence of his loving family.

Henry was born Jan. 10, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Wilbur H. and Dorothy A. Farnum Van Dine. He graduated from Susquehanna University with a BA in philosophy. On June 26, 1965, he married Connie Coman in Sweet Air, Md.

Hank was a teacher in the Arlington school system for nine years. His lifelong passion for plants, architecture and nature drew him into the nursery business. For more than 25 years, he strove to perfect his three successful nursery businesses. In more recent years, he established a wholesale growing operation on his well maintained property in Grand Isle. For the last three and a half years, he worked in the nonprofit affordable housing field. At the time of his death, he was an employee of the Lake Champlain Housing Corporation.

Hank’s hobbies included biking with his beloved wife Connie, snowshoeing with his wonderful sons and precious grandsons and camping at many state parks. He spent much of his spare time puttering around his farmstead, creating beauty and works of art. He often found great enjoyment atop a well-running diesel.

A master craftsman, his incredible carpentry skills enabled him to build a house for his family, jack up a barn and lots of projects in between.

Hank was a large-hearted, enthusiastic man who volunteered his time to many charitable organizations over the years, as well as helping anyone in need. His giving was generous and unconditional. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and many, many friends. He died as he lived - in great love, grace and dignity.

Hank is survived by his wife Connie of Grand Isle; their children, David Van Dine of Grand Isle and Justin Van Dine and his wife Gwen and their children, Forest and Cody, of West Burke; his brother, Peter Van Dine and wife Rebecca of Doylestown, Pa.; his two sisters, Judy Van Dine of Bristol, Maine and Marion Robertson of Westbury, N.Y; his father-in-law, Eugene C. Coman of Perryville, Md.; his sisters-in-law and their spouses, Judy and Bill Thode of Harleysville, Pa., Barbara and Tony Mantegna of Middle River, Pa., Elizabeth and Dick Phillips of Ellicott City, Md., Eugene Coman Jr. of Baltimore, Md. and Nancy and Brian Hogan of Freeland, Md.; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at 3 p.m. in the South Hero Congregational Church on South Street in South Hero.
