CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- Herbert L. Smith, 74, of Orville Way, died Saturday, May 17, 2003 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, Vt., where he had resided for several months. He was the beloved husband of Charlotte Cooper Smith.

Born April 22, 1928 in Norwalk, Conn., he was the son of Dan and Helen Robinson. After graduating from the Stanford Technical School, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the tank corp.

For many years, Herb had his own woodworking business in Norwalk building fine cabinets. In earlier years, he worked as a mechanic and in construction.

In 1994, he and his wife moved to Cambridge. He was a member of the Embury United Methodist Church, and a former member of Christ Episcopal Church in East Norwalk. He also belonged to the National American Legion.

He enjoyed model building, landscaping and playing golf. He was a member of the Dutch Haven Golf Course.

Besides his wife of 48 years, he is survived by a daughter and her husband, Katherine and Jay Dearstyne and three grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate Herb’s life will be held Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at the Embury United Methodist Church, 41 East Main St., Cambridge.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Vermont Veterans Home Activities Program, Veteran’s Drive, Bennington, VT 05201.
