BENNINGTON -- Herbert Lloyd Macauley, 79, a resident of Gage Street, Bennington, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation following an extended illness.

He was born in Sharon, N.Y., May 3, 1927. He was the son of the late Herbert Floyd Macauley and Iva Addie (Smith) Macauley. He received his education in Bennington. At the age of 18 Herb enlisted in the Army where he served until March 9, 1947, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Technician, fifth grade. Herb received several awards including the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal.

In 2003 Herb received his high school diploma from Mount Anthony Union High School. He worked at Benmont Paper Company in Bennington as a stationary engineer for 30 years and later at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center where he worked for 18 years retiring in 1992.

Herb was a member of the American Legion Post 1332 in Bennington. He enjoyed puzzles, playing cards, scrabble and other games with his friends. His family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his main interest.

Survivors include a son, Richard M. Macauley of Edmonds, Wash.; five daughters, Elizabeth A. Sperlonga of Lanesboro, Mass., Mary E. Weeks Belcher and her husband David of Lanesboro, Mass., Barbara J. Peterson and her husband Clarence Jr. of Stephentown, N.Y., Nancy J. Macauley of Pittsfield, Mass., and Patricia M. Tower and her husband, William, of Adams, Mass.;a brother, Albert John Macauley and his wife, Mary, of Bennington; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a very close friend Marie of Bennington; a niece Gail Sourdiffe; a nephew Alvon F. Macauley Jr. of Cambridge, N.Y.; grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

He was pre-deceased by a brother Alvon Floyd Macauley Sr., a sister Iva Mae Macauley and a sister in law Dorothy Marsh Macauley.

The burial with military honors will take place at the family lot at the Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge, N.Y., at the convenience of the family.
