Obituary Condolences

Hildagarde K. Ross 1915 - 2009 CAMBRIDGE, VT Hildagarde K. Ross, 93, formerly of Spring St., died peacefully at the Vermont Veterans' Home, Bennington. She was the widow of Richard E. Ross who died in 1990. Born Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1915, in Rutland, she was the only child of Edward H. and Maud Bissell Killary. After graduating from Rutland High School, Hildie studied music at the Ithaca School of Music. Hildie and Dick were married Nov. 14, 1940, while he was serving in the Army. Hildy lived in Mendon with her parents, awaiting her husband's return. When Dick came safely home, they built a house in Mendon. Later, they moved to Chittenden, then to Gloversville, N.Y. and finally settled in Cambridge in 1958. Hildie was always very active in her community. When her children were young, she participated in the Cub Scouts in Mendon and Girl Scouts in Cambridge and the CCS PTA. In later years, she was a member of the Mary McClellan Hospital Auxiliary and was Volunteer of the Year in 1993. She was a member of the Village Co-op and a volunteer at the Village Store. Music was always very important to her. She taught piano lessons to many of Cambridge's youth. She was the musician for the Order of the Eastern Star, Cambridge Valley Chapter #570 for over 30 years. After her husband's death, she joined St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where she treated parishioners attending the 8 o'clock service to some very interesting renditions of the familiar hymns. It was wonderful to stroll past her home on Spring Street and hear her playing the beautiful baby grand piano that took up much of the front parlor. Even at the Vermont Veterans' Home, when coaxed, Hildie would treat listeners with a fine tune. Hildie was devoted to her cat, enjoyed feeding the birds and fussing at the squirrels, liked lunching and cocktails in the evening. Biannual trips to Maine and walking on the seashore were a wonderful part of her life. An accomplished knitter, she made gorgeous, very complicated Irish knit sweaters like they were simple projects. Apple pie, smoked oyster rolls, asparagus tea sandwiches and popcorn balls at Halloween were her culinary specialties. She leaves two children, C. Thomas (Beaver) Ross and wife ,Elizabeth Nichols-Ross, of Cambridge and Martha (Poodie) Pierce and husband, Richard (Rit), of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Chad T. Ross and wife Kerri of Queensbury, N.Y., Holly Kondej of Adams, Mass., Ethan Roy of North Bennington, and Rick Pierce of Salem; seven great-grandchildren, and several cousins.
