Hiram B. Green

SHAFTSBURY Hiram B."Hi" Green, 88, of Shaftsbury, passed away on May 9, 2014, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.Mr. Green was born in Cambridge, N.Y., the son of the late James Green Sr. and Catherine Riley Green. He was a World War II Army veteran and served in Japan and the Philippines. In earlier years, he worked at the Vermont Tissue Paper Company and later at H. T. Cushman Company for many years, until his retirement. Following retirement, he continued to be an avid woodworker and enjoyed working around his home. Hi always had an exceptional talent as a cartoonist. At an early age, while working in his father's garage in North Hoosick, Hi was approached by Norman Rockwell, who had seen several examples of Hi's work. Mr. Rockwell offered Hi a job working for him as a cartoonist. However, Hi had just recently started a new job at the tissue mill and declined the offer. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Kinney Green; his nephew, Francis E. (Rosemary) Kinney of Shaftsbury, and his niece, Brenda Kinney (Ron) Wendoloski of Loudon, TN. He is also survived by numerous other nieces, and nephews. Mr. Green is predeceased by four brothers, James Jr., Francis Joseph, Theodore, and Charles Green, and by four sisters, Margarita Valentine, Irene and Katherine Green, and Josephine King. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at 10:00 A.M., where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place in the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y. where committal services will be held on Thursday. Should friends desire, memorial contributions in Hiram B. Green's memory may be made to the Members Assistance Fund at the Vermont Veterans Home through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington VT 05201.
