Holly A. Marshall

1957-2014 SHAFTSBURY Holly A. Marshall, 57, a former resident of Shaftsbury, died on June 7 in Thessaloniki, Greece, where she was an English teacher and theater director at Anatolia College, a private high school. She formerly served as Director of the Field Work Term at Bennington College, and she also taught English and Social Studies at Mount Anthony H.S. In the late 1980s she founded the Shaftsbury Children's Theater and wrote and directed its shows at Shaftsbury Elementary School. A native of Malden, Mass., Holly graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in English. Before coming to Bennington College, she worked on Indian reservations in Montana and Maine and at Northeastern University. In Greece, she taught American and Irish literature, Native American studies, and the history of the American musical. As head of her school's Drama Club, she directed many musicals, most recently "Anything Goes" and "Oklahoma." Holly was a lover of nature who helped build a log cabin on property located off West Mountain Rd. in Shaftsbury. The cabin, like the house that followed it in the same clearing, ran on solar power. With her family, she hiked Vermont's trails and canoed its lakes and rivers. She was planning a trip back to Shaftsbury this summer to visit old friends. She leaves a daughter ,Phoebe, 28, of Thessaloniki, Greece; a son, Freedom, of oston, Mass.; a sister, Brooke, of Bangor, Maine, and her former spouse, Phil Holland, of Thessaloniki.
