BENNINGTON -- Hope Louise (Hoctor) Barber, 77, a resident of Dunham Avenue in North Bennington, died Saturday morning Sept. 30, 2006, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Hope was born in Dorset on April 19,1929, a daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth (Lillie) Hoctor. She attended the West Road one-room school house in Dorset as a child, attended Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester and graduated from North Bennington High School with the class of 1945.

She worked as an office manager for Central Vermont Public Service for many years before retiring. She was an avid reader, reading thousands of books, and enjoyed cooking, photography and writing. She was very active with the humane society and various charitable organizations dealing with animals.

Hope is survived by her son, Russell J. Barber, and his wife, Sharon Yellowfly, of Running Springs, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Francis Barber, whom she married in February 1949. Mr. Barber died in December 1986.

At the request of the family, there will be no formal funeral services.
