Hope VanStone 1923 - 2009 ARLINGTON, VT Mrs. Hope Bennett Godkin VanStone, 85, a resident of Route 7A, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday March 4, 2005, surrounded by her loving family. Hope was born in Derby, Conn., on Nov. 22, 1923, daughter of LeRoy P. and Ruth Bartlett Bennett. She was a 1941 graduate of Seymour, Conn. High School, and a 1943 graduate of Green Mountain College in Poultney. She had been employed as a secretary of the Boy Scouts of America and secretary to the principal of Seymour High School until her marriage to Warren Godkin. After the Godkins moved to Ohio, she was den mother for the Cub Scouts and secretary for the P.T.A. She was the church school Superintendent and secretary/ office manager at Valley Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge for 19 years. Upon moving to Shaftsbury she worked for Orvis Company then United Counseling Service, first in Bennington and then secretary/office manager for U.C.S. in Manchester. Mr. Godkin died at their home on Feb. 18, 1976, she later married Dr. James M. VanStone of Avon, Conn., at her home in Shaftsbury, on Aug. 12, 1978. They relocated to Avon where she was secretary at St. Matthew Lutheran Church for three years. Upon Dr. VanStone's retirement from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., they returned to Shaftsbury, she then worked for the Office on Aging from which she retired. Following retirement, she enjoyed her family, refinishing furniture ,decorating and was an avid reader. She particularly enjoyed entertaining family and friends in her home. Following Dr. Stone's death and living in Shaftsbury for 30 years, she sold the home in 2002 and moved to Arlington. She leaves her children Warren B. and Joanne Godkin of Bennington, Kenneth P. Godkin of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Bruce B. Godkin of Bennington and Susan H. and John Blume of Shaftsbury, daughters-in-law; Kathy S. and Keith Lewis of Pasadena, Calif., and Susan Connor of White Creek, N.Y., grandchildren W. Travis and Kaitlen Godkin of Oregon, Tyler B. Godkin of Bennington, McKenzie Blume and Christopher Blume of Shaftsbury, Chad and Sylvia Scott of Palmdale, Calif., a sister, Barbara Bennett of Enosburg, brother-in-law, L.A. and Joyce Godkin of Bethel, Conn., sisters-in-law, Alyce Boies of Colorado, and Emily Godkin of Connecticut, several nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: At her request, there will be no funeral services, instead a reception will be held at her home for family and friends for laughter and remembering. Hope was cremated and at a time chosen by her family will be buried at her favorite place- the family property at Lake Willoughby, VT.
