Horace C. Baker

1923-2012 BENNINGTON Horace C. Baker, 89, a longtime resident of Grove St. in Bennington died Monday September 10, 2012 at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.

He was born in Shaftsbury, Vt., June 14, 1923. He was the son of the late Robert and Clara (Bump) Baker. Horace received his education in Shaftsbury, Vt. He married the former Mary Buck. Mary died in 1986.

For 22 years Horace was employed at Vermont Tissue in North Bennington and for several years at Garrison Printing, He later was employed as the building superintendent at the BCIC Building in North Bennington. Horace and his wife, Mary,, owned and operated Baker's Community Care Home on Grove St. For many years Horace was a sheriff with the Bennington Sheriff's Department.

Horace enjoyed going to garage and tag sales. He was a master at buying and selling. He loved to tinker and fix things. He loved cats and over the years had taken in many strays. Horace also enjoyed going to the race track.

Survivors include a daughter in law, Lorraine Baker of Bennington, two grandchildren, Maryann Baker Russell and her husband Christopher of Shelburne, Vt., and Robert Baker of Bennington, a great grandson Nicholas Russell of Shelburne, Vt. Two step grandchildren, Daniel Flanders and his wife Nancy of Bennington and Darlene Davis and her husband Pete of Bennington. Four step great grandchildren, Kimberly Klippel of Ballston Spa, N.Y., Katie Flanders of Tennessee, Lisa Mattison of Shaftsbury and William Hurley of Searsburg, Vt.; several step great great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins; His caregiver, Donna Browe of Shaftsbury.

He was pre-deceased by a son Frank E. Baker, a step daughter Mary Dolly Flanders a step grandson David Flanders and three brothers, Chauncey, Theodore and Charles Baker.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday September 14 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Robin Greene officiating

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington.
