Howard F. Corey

1931 - 2014 SHAFTSBURY Howard F. Corey 83 a resident of Meadow Lane, passed away Friday morning Nov. 28, at Twin Maples Community Care Home in Bennington. The son of Perle N. and Ruth L. (Ferguson) Corey, he was born in Bennington on July 13, 1931. Howard received his early education at the Hicks Schoolhouse and then Bennington High School. He was a member of the Vermont Army National Guard Reserve - 204th Unit. He married Myrtle J. Downing in Shaftsbury on June 11, 1953, recently celebrating 61 years of marriage. Howard had worked as a carpenter and plumber throughout his life, he had worked at J.H. Winslow, for Guy Morse Construction and was self employed for many years. He was a member of the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and was a member of the Men's Group. Howard devoted many hours of his time and talent to the needs of the church and church community. He was a member of the Green Mountain Stamp Club and a ten year member of the Shaftsbury Fire Department. He had varied interests including bird watching, collecting buttons, genealogy research, and photography of covered bridges and old barns. As an accomplished woodworker, he took pride in knowing he had made many dolls for babies at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. Lately he enjoyed completing jigsaw puzzles. He leaves his wife, Myrtle; brothers, Kenneth N. Corey of Shaftsbury, and George E. Corey of Bennington; siste,r Barbara R. Giroux of Fla.; brother-in-law, Charles A. Downing, (Barbara); and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Downing) Kano, and Jean (Downing) Smith; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was pre-deceased by sister-in-law, Norma L. Corey. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Thursday Dec. 4, at 10 a.m. at the HANSON WALBRIDGE SHEA FUNERAL HOME with Kenneth Coonradt officiating. Burial will follow in the Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 9 - 10 a.m. when the family will be present.
