Howard L. Crego 1941-2011 SHAFTSBURY, VT Mr. Howard L. "Skip" Crego 69 a resident of Ridge Road died peacefully Saturday May 28, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family. Skip was born in Middletown, N.Y. on June 15, 1941, he was the son of Howard and Patricia (Eronimous) Crego. He was a 1959 graduate of Kingston High School, following graduation he entered the US Navy, where he served for the next 20 years, retiring in 1979 with the rank Lieutenant Commander. While in the Navy he served aboard the Missile Submarine USS Abraham Lincoln and Fleet Destroyers USS Wm. R. Rush and USS Barry. He also served in Project Management for repairs and construction at several Naval shipyards. Skip attended Perdue University from 1964-1968, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He attended US Naval Post Graduate School from 1972 -1975, receiving a Master of Science Degree and the Degree of Mechanical Engineer. Following his retirement from the US Navy, Skip worked as an Engineer for Oak Mitsui in Hoosick Falls, NY and CHEMFAB in North Bennington. He was a member of American legion Post 13, Southwestern Vermont Amateur Radio Club, serving for many years as President, served as Chairman of Engineering Technologies Curriculum Committee at the Career Development Center (CDC), a board member during the original design and construction of the CDC and was active as an adult education instructor through the CDC Learning Institute's classes with various local employers. He was a former member of the Bennington Lions Club where he had served as Secretary. Skip enjoyed hiking, camping, traveling and HAM radio communications. He was an active informal shooter and gun enthusiast. He leave his wife of 49 years, Bonnie Crego whom he married October 8, 1961 in Keene, N.H., a son Brian Crego of Townshend, daughter Robin of Mayflower, Arkansas, sister Patricia of Lawrenceville, Ga., grandchildren Treynor and Annika, daughter in law Kelli all of Newfane, he was predeceased by a son David who died in 1982. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday June 1 at 10 a.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. A gathering will take place at the family home on Ridge Road immediately after the burial service. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present.
