BENNINGTON -- Howard R. Eaton, 83, a resident of Brookside Apartments in Bennington, died early Tuesday morning, July 17, 2007, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

Howard was born in Woodlands, N.Y., and Town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, N.Y., on June 2, 1924, the son of Howard S. and Hilda Edele Ward Eaton. Howard was raised in Ardsley, N.Y., and graduated from Ardsley High School, class of 1942. While living in Ardsley, Howard was also a member of the Ardsley Methodist Church. Upon graduation, Howard was drafted by the Army Infantry, serving his tour of duty during WWII from Feb. 24, 1943 until February of 1946. Howard achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant where he was squad leader of an 11-man rifle squad and trained men in fighting. He also saw action in both theaters, the European Theater of Operations and the Pacific Theater.

Howard was a fan of the Boston Red Sox, loved gardening, enjoyed playing bingo often and cherished times spent with his family. Howard came to Green Mountain Race Track in 1970 where he owned and trained thoroughbred racehorses. He also spent time at other racetracks throughout the country, finally retiring in Florida at Tampa Bay Downs.

He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Hayes and her husband, Richard, of Bennington, and Hilda Saul of Bennington; his sister Evelyn Eaton Chambers of Fultonville, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Dennis R. Saul, Michael R., Heather and Sierra Buck and Jennifer Poirier; three great-grandchildren; four nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances (Fran) Eaton; two daughters, Mary Ellen Eaton and Frances Elaine Eaton and his grandson Clint H. R. Buck, who died in a motor vehicle accident in 2005.
