SAINT ALBANS -- Howard H. “Jake” Jacobs, MD, 84, a well-known local physician, passed away Saturday evening, Oct. 23, 2004, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston. He was born in Enosburg on Jan. 5, 1920, the son of the late Alfred A. and Elizabeth (Lafley) Jacobs.

On June 2, 1945, in Allentown, Pa., Dr. Jacobs married Margaret Keeney, who predeceased him on June 11, 1981.

Following graduation from the University of Vermont Medical School in 1945, Dr. Jacobs moved to Saint Albans where he had a general practice of medicine until 1950, when he became an anesthesiologist for the next 36 years, retiring in January 1986. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and a former member of several state, local and national medical and anesthesia groups. Dr. Jacobs was an avid Boston Red Sox baseball fan and a member of the Champlain Country Club.

Survivors include his three sons, Thomas H. Jacobs and his wife, Lee, of Bennington, Lee D. Jacobs, MD and his wife, Deb, of Atlanta, and John F. Jacobs and his wife, Sue, of Lebanon, N.H.; 10 grandchildren, Tiffany Michalski, Lindsay Jacobs, Beth Jones, Chris Jacobs, Julie Jacobs, Adam Jacobs, Paul Jacobs, Ben Jacobs, Brad Quimby, and Brandy Blackinton; two great-granddaughters, Sarah Kate Jones and Morgan Blackinton; his sister; Winifred Duffy of Enosburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife Margaret, he was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Jacobs.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at 11 a.m. from St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Fairfield Street, with the Rev. Leonidas B. Laroche celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Dr. Jacobs’ family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495 or St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 45 Fairfield St., Saint Albans, VT 05478.
