Hugh G. Baker BENNINGTON Hugh G. Baker, 81, died surrounded by family, on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009.Son of Ted and Gladys Baker, Hugh spent his childhood with sisters Bobbie, Beverly, Betty and brother, Howie, in Oyster Bay Cove, Long Island, N.Y. From 1945 through 1947, Hugh served in the US Merchant Marines and married Irene Witte in 1953. Together they built their home in Bayville, N.Y., and raised their family. After retiring from the US Post Office in Bayville, where he worked as a Letter Carrier for 32 years, Hugh and Irene moved to Vermont. They opened and operated Bakers at Bennington Bed & Breakfast for eight years before settling on East Road in Bennington. Hugh also served on the Bennington Historical Society and worked at the Bennington Banner. Hugh thoroughly enjoyed his family, animals, cooking, reading, painting, "Britcoms", and a good hearty laugh. Hugh leaves his beloved wife of 56 years, Irene, their five children; Christine Baker Stines, Lisette Baker, Ted Baker, Lorraine Baker, Jennifer Wright; their nine grandchildren, to whom he was affectionately known as "Pop Pop"; Monique Baker-Stines, Jasmin Baker-Stines, Brianna Baker-Stines, Lindsey Baker, Philip Piscitello, Cole Muttee, Hayden Muttee, Joot Wright, Lydia Wright, and sons-in law, Patrick Stines and Drex Wright, and his two dogs, Nick and Nora. He will be greatly missed by all. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Friday, Sept. 25, 2009 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Graveside committal services will be held Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Park lawn Cemetery in Bennington. Should friends desire contributions in Hugh G.
