BENNINGTON -- Ida M. Caslin, 86, widow of Basil R. Caslin, a former resident of Stark Street, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, following a long illness.

Born in Monkton, May 21, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Ida (Sherman) Parker. She received her education in the Monkton schools.

Mr. and Mrs. Caslin were married in Bennington on June 7, 1937. Mr. Caslin died March 13, 1977. Mrs. Caslin, with her late husband, owned and operated the family business, Caslins Grocery, on the corner of Dewey and Elm streets for more than 30 years. The business is now owned by her son, Terry Caslin.

In earlier years, Mrs. Caslin was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Andrew. Her home and family were her main interests.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Liporace of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; five sons, David B. Caslin of Brazoria, Texas, Rick J. Caslin, Terry M. Caslin and Craig P. Caslin, all of Bennington, and Mark E. Caslin of Brattleboro; 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a sister Rachel Mcente of Wallingford. Mrs. Caslin was predeceased by two daughters, Sally Bushee and Gloria Watson and also by brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m., where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 2 from 4 to 8 p.m., when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be offered Friday evening.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Rivers Edge Activities Fund in memory of Mrs. Caslin through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington VT 05201.
