1934-2012

BENNINGTON, VT Mrs. Irene Gates, 78, a resident of South Branch Street died peacefully Monday, November 26, 2012 at Rivers Edge Community Care Home.

The daughter of Martin and Jennie (Walsh) McHugh, she was born on Nov. 18, 1934 in Cambridge, N.Y. where she grew up, attended local schools and graduated from Cambridge High School.

On Nov. 6, 1955 Irene married Floyd Edward Gates of Hoosick Falls. She resided in Hoosick Falls for many years and provided child care prior to moving to Bennington in 1983. Mrs. Gates worked at the Bennington Banner, Schmeltzer Manufacturing, Mace Inc., and Stratton Mountain.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, traveling and playing Bingo.

Mrs. Gates former husband, Floyd Gates, predeceased her in January of 2001.

Mrs. Gates leaves her son, Thomas Gates and his partner, Rick Steiger, of South Orange, N.J.; daughters, Sylvia Carpenter and husband John of Bennington, Claudia Gates of Hoosick Falls and Renie George and husband Bruce of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; sisters, Jane Guidon and husband Ed of Center Cambridge and Pauline Svitak and husband Bob of Bennington; grandchildren Jess and Sean Carpenter, Devin and Ashley Olszowy, Christopher and Jennifer Simpson, Kristen and husband Andrew; and great grandson, Tavin Odell; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two sons, Christopher and Edward Gates; and infant brother, Edward Joseph McHugh.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 29 at 10 am at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Hoosick Falls. Friends may call at the HANSON WALBRIDGE SHEA FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present.
