Irving "Pete" Baker

Obituary Condolences

BUSKIRK, N.Y. -- Irving “Pete” Baker, 92, of King Road, died peacefully at his daughter’s home on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, after a long illness. He was the husband of Martha (Knowlton) Baker.

Born May 28, 1911 in West Hoosick, he was the son of Irving and Belle (Baker)Baker. As a young man he was a farmer and then he worked on a road crew for the B & M Railroad. In his later years, he was a groundskeeper at Bennington College. He was a member of the Eagle Bridge United Methodist Church.

Pete’s greatest passion was gardening. He was famous for his strawberries. Even this past summer, having experienced the devastating loss of his home to fire, he was still growing the best tomatoes around.

Besides his loving wife of 59 years, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-laws, Barbara and Frank Gates and Linda and Joe Springer, all of Buskirk. He was “Pa Pete” to six grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

The family is planning a memorial service at a later time.

At Pete’s request, he will be cremated and his ashes will be buried at Island Hill Cemetery with a private graveside service.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Cambridge Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 52, Cambridge, NY 12816 or to the Buskirk Fire Department, Buskirk, NY 12028.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, Cambridge.
