HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- J. Donald “Donnie” Smith, 75, died suddenly on Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at his residence on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. He was the husband of the late Rose Ann Leonard who passed on April 12, 1999.

Born on Jan. 5, 1931, in Hoosick Falls, son of the late Dr. George E. and Mary (McGrath) Smith. Donnie graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1948, and received his bachelor’s degree from Simmons School of Mortuary Science in 1956. In 1968 he purchased the Mahar Funeral Home, which he owned and operated with his family until the time of his death.

Throughout his life Donnie was a competitive golfer. He was a member at the Hoosick Falls Country Club and Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass. He was a former club champion at the Mt. Anthony Country Club and was club champion at the Hoosick Falls Country Club several times. He also won the Senior Club Championship at the Taconic Golf Club.

Donnie was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 178 and a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church. In his earlier years he was the varsity boy’s basketball coach at St. Mary’s and a past president of the Town of Hoosick Little League.

Survivors include his daughter, Margaret Restino and her husband, Tom; his two sons, Timothy Smith and his wife Mary Beth, and George E. Smith and his wife Senga; his grandchildren, Tyler, Ashley, Kate and Hayden Smith, Anna, Jacob and Drew Restino, Mathew and Miles Smith all of Hoosick Falls; his brother, George R. Smith and his wife, Jean of Raleigh, N.C.; his sister, Eleanor Cuddihy of Texas, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:15 a.m. from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street. Burial will follow the mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Academy, Sisters of St. Joseph, Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad or the Karen McGovern Memorial Fund through the funeral home.
