POWNAL -- James B. “Ben” Beattie, 90 , a former resident of Northwest Hill Road, Pownal, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation following a long illness.

The youngest of 17 children, Ben was born in Manchester on Sept. 10, 1917, son of the late William and Charlotte (Bell) Beattie. He received his education in Manchester and later received a degree in accounting from Bay Path College in Springfield, Mass.

He married the former Ann Rosemary Bovey on Sept. 11, 1944. Mrs. Beattie died Feb. 1, 1993.

In earlier years Ben operated a dairy farm in Manchester. Later he was employed at the former Green Mountain Race Track. At the time of his retirement Ben worked in the bookkeeping department at Stratton Mountain.

He was a former member of the Manchester Lions Club and the Bennington County Mounted Sheriff’s Department. He had also served with the Vermont State Guard who patrolled the state borders during World War II.

An avid outdoorsmen, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with horses.

Survivors include two daughters, Shelley B. Porter of Pownal and Joan Nichols of South Carolina; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday, Dec. 31, at 4 p.m.

There will be no calling hours.

Entombment will take place in Park Lawn Chapel with burial to take place in the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery, Pownal, in the spring.
